A genset on a reefer container is a diesel-powered generator that supplies electricity to the cooling unit. It allows the container to keep cargo cold during transport when shore power is not available. The genset clips onto the container or sits on the truck chassis. It typically runs for 24 to 48 hours on one tank.

A genset is essentially a portable power station for a reefer. Without it, refrigerated cargo could lose temperature control during road journeys where no external power supply is available.
