HELPFUL TIPS BEFORE PUTTING YOUR MOTORCYCLE IN A BIKE STORAGE UNIT

Perhaps you’re storing your motorcycle for winter, or maybe you’re planning on it being in storage for longer. Here are some top tips to ensure it comes out as good as it went in.

• USE THE RIGHT PRE-STORAGE CARE

We recommend you use winter-grade oil in the engine and include a fuel stabilizer to extend the fuel’s shelf life. If you’re storing for over six months, consider draining carbs and lubricating cylinders. Ensure your fuel pipe feed is turned off.

• REMOVE YOUR BIKE’S BATTERY

Remove the battery and fully charge it to prevent sulfation and prolong its overall lifespan. Adding distilled water might help as well, although this is dependent on each motorbike’s battery type.

• THOROUGHLY CLEAN YOUR MOTORCYCLE

Wash and buff your motorcycle to keep its paint pristine and ensure you’ve got no acidic substances sitting on the work. We advise applying a layer of motorcycle lubricant to protect metal hardware, too.

• CARE FOR YOUR TYRES

Depending on the bike you’re riding, and the length of time you’re storing for, you may want to deflate the tyres a little and keep them on blocks of wood. If you can stop by every couple of weeks to rotate the motorbike’s tyres by hand, that would be great too.

• KEEP THE MOTORBIKE INSURANCE GOING

As good as it sounds, it’s not a great idea to cancel your insurance just because your bike’s off the road. This stops you taking your bike out for a spontaneous spin, and risks the chance of your coverage increasing the next time you try to seek insurance.
