HELPING TO PRESERVE MEAT IN ONE OF THE HOTTEST CORNERS OF AFRICA

Storing food in the baking heat is a challenge for Botswanan livestock farmers – which is why TITAN’s Arctic SuperStore cold storage is such a hit. 

THE CHALLENGE

Word of our incredible modular Arctic SuperStore cold storage solution had reached the Botswanan Ministry of Agriculture, who got in touch to ask how it worked. In simple terms, we explained, it’s a system to turn any combination of 20ft or 40ft ArcticStore containers (capable of maintaining temperatures of -40°C to +45°C) into a portable cold storage ‘warehouse’. All of the internal container walls can be opened up to create a vast, open space.

The Ministry was intrigued. Could this become an integral part of a new state-of-the-art cattle and small stock project in the arid Kgalagadi region of the country?

THE SOLUTION

This exciting rural development project, which has a total budget of $15m, is needed to support local commercial and subsistence livestock farmers – and will create employment and fair-trade opportunities in the region.

We demonstrated how 5 x 40ft ArcticStore containers placed side by side could form the main body of their cold storage facility and explained that a standalone ArcticBlast unit – capable of blast freezing in rapid time – would be the ideal add-on. The Ministry agreed and signed off on the project.

THE DELIVERY

A hard standing had been created at the site for the arrival of our Arctic SuperStore, which made installation a breeze. Surrounded by a suite of new buildings with distinctive green roofs, our bright white SuperStore could be seen for miles. Work on the site continues.

THE RESULTS

Once up and running, the cold storage facility will be transformative, enabling the rapid blast-freezing of 8 tonnes of beef and goat cuts per day. When packed and boxed up, a total of 80 tonnes of produce can safely be kept in the SuperStore until it is ready for distribution into the Botswanan marketplace or overseas.
